The child who has trouble completing his homework in the elementary
school years, is quite ill-equipped for middle school demands. In elementary school, he did some of his work
for one teacher. In middle school, he starts by doing all of his work for one
or two of his teachers but none of his work for at least one teacher. He is very motivated to do well, but he lacks
the foundation to handle assignments coming in from several different teachers.
He starts the new school year fully confident that he will do well, and thinks
he’s doing well for the first few weeks.
Then, he feels slammed and betrayed when confronted by the fact that he’s
failing in some of his classes. Like a house of cards, subject by subject, his
work declines. In high school, the
problem will get worse if the child is an athlete, since the days of town based
sports are coming to an end. He loses
athletic eligibility, gets separated from his friends, and is now at risk of
getting involved with undesirable crowds.
